Eyjafjallajokull Volcano affects mine

The eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull Volcano under the  Eyjafjalla Glacier has affected folks far and wide. On April 14 just as the volcano erupted for the second time in one month, my  sister, a cosmetologist, was in midair traveling to Europe to attend hair conventions in Bologna and Paris.

She traveled for more than 12 hours before knowing what had happened. And it was just as well because  the hair convention in Bologna, Cosmo Pro Hair Convention, went on as usual. It was not until her first clients began to show up at her booth that she found out. But to no avail. She had to continue the marathon of primping hair, applying the keratin, setting it in, closing the deals, ordering the product, pitching, promotions, sales, etc. Though she was stunned—she had to gather herself and continue her work. She said she’ll be in denial until tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. when the hair convention concludes and she will have time to think. Right now she has no idea how she’ll get home or whether the second leg of her trip, that has her in Paris this week will ever happen.

Asked about how the show was affected, she said about 20% of the exhibitors could not make it to the event. Some made the road trip from Rome to Bologna that took them 23 hours and others made it, but their merchandise was stranded in England and Paris with airports and airplanes grounded because of the spewing ash and dirt from the volcano.

She promises to call. We’ll see what happens.
