Linden, NJ (Sept. 5, 2013) –  A day of fun at Sandy Hook turned into a learning experience after a man with what appeared to be a unicycle kept entering the water.

Carlos Carvajal, Geologist

It was Carlos Carvajal, a geologist, who is working with Rutgers University to measure the sediment erosion and the beach and dune erosion.Carvajal and a team of geologists are creating a profile of the Jersey Shore to see the effect left by “Super Storm Sandy” that hit the Jersey coast ten months ago.

Coastal Surveying has been in existence since the 1800s.

This agency charts the seacoasts for ships, predicts the path of hurricanes, and protects our precious reefs and the spawning of salmon.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, (as is called today) coastal surveying was first used in the United States in 1807 when California became a state during the Mexican-American War.

Soon after,  Pres. Jefferson  created the Office of Coast Survey and ordered the coast of California measured.

Surveying the coast is important to ensure planning and the protection of the beach and the people.
