This agency charts the seacoasts for ships, predicts the path of hurricanes, and protects our precious reefs and the spawning of salmon.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, (as is called today) coastal surveying was first used in the United States in 1807 when California became a state during the Mexican-American War.

Soon after,  Pres. Jefferson  created the Office of Coast Survey and ordered the coast of California measured.

Surveying the coast is important to ensure planning and the protection of the beach and the people.
